The Five Pillars

Passion Based Learning
MUSE infuses Passion Based Learning with Core Academics to create learning opportunities that are challenging, individualized and unique. Students are encouraged through their interests and passions to learn at a deep and meaningful level.
 
Through thoughtful questions and discovery, students are encouraged to relay their interest and passions to teachers and peers. The teachers uncover what the student knows about their passion and what it is they want to learn. Questions are then formulated and the exploration begins. Teachers take the student’s lead and provide opportunities for projects throughout the semester based on these interests. Students work in a variety of environments (alone, one-on-one, and in small and large groups) and through investigation, study and, research - learning unfolds.
Academics
Specific to each grade level, core academics (math, science, language arts, social studies, history etc) and grade level milestones are woven into studies on topics which are derived from the students themselves. MUSE teachers differentiate their instruction to accommodate students with diverse learning styles, and document their learning through personalized student BLUEPRINTS.



Communication
MUSE uses the Process Communication Model (PCM), a tool that provides a platform to:
  • Assess, connect, motivate and resolve conflict
  • Observe and understand my behavior
  • Understand the behavior of others and know how to communicate with them effectively
  • Analyze conflict and miscommunication and know how to find a resolution and a return to effective communication
 


Self-Efficacy
Self-efficacy is defined as “my belief in my ability to be successful by accessing my open, resourceful and persistent skill sets.” Research shows that a student’s belief in their ability to successful directly relates to being successful.
Sustainability
MUSE values and exercises sustainable practices on our campuses and in our curriculum. This comes to life with our Food Energy Water (F.E.W.) initiative, where students educate themselves and the community on the process of re-purposing and conserving these precious resources.
 
As a community, we value and exercise sustainable practices on our campus as well as within our curriculum through MUSE’s:
  • Green Campuses, created and managed with sustainable materials
  • Seed to Table Program, that gives a hands-on way for students to learn about the connection between their everyday good choices, their health and the health of our environment
  • Plant-Based Food Program - the most sustainable way to eat
  • Water conservation
  • Waste management
  • Alternative energy (solar) and energy conservation
  • Transportation Program (bus, carpool)
